Description

Stave Lake brand pre-finished Western Red Cedar shingles are factory coated on all sides with Cabot® Clear Solution, a high performance UV resistant penetrating oil.

Pre-finishing in a controlled environment ensures a higher quality finish than would be achieved by applying on site and also reduces the cost.

Pre-finished Western Red Cedar shingles are for sidewall (vertical cladding) applications rather than roofing. Use natural unfinished No.1 grade shingles (known as Blue Label) for all roofing applications (lower grades may be used on garden structures and secondary buildings).

Application Instructions

Single Coursing (Maximum exposure 200mm (8"))

  • Apply a suitable breathable membrane or felt
  • Double the first course at the base of the wall - use dry, low grade (black lable) shingles or other acceptable under coursing for starter course.
  • Space shingles slightly apart (6 - 8mm) to allow for expansion and prevent possible buckling.
  • Offset joints 38mm from adjacent courses
  • Drive nails approx 25mm above butt line of succeeding course for concealed nailing
  • For shingles up to 200mm wide, two nails in each shingle are placed 19mm from each edge, for wider shingles a third nail should be driven in centre
  • Use 31mm Stainless Steel annular ring shank nails

Double Coursing (Maximum exposure 350mm (14"))

  • Same as Shingle coursing
  • Two layers of dry under coursing recommended for starter course, then the outer course
  • Each succeeding course requires dry under coursing to be applied before outer course is applied. Outer courses applied 25mm lower than under coursing
  • Face nail outer course shingles with two nails driven about two inches above the butt line, 19mm from edge plus additional nails every 4 inches on wider shingles.

Finishing Corners

  • Outside corners can be either:
    • laced
    • shingles butted against corner boards
    • mitred
  • Inside corners
    • Butted shingles against square wood strip on inside corner

Advantages of using prefinished shingles over on-site finishing

  • Pre-finished with a high quality clear penetrating oil that enhances the natural colour tones and grain patterns of Western Red Cedar
  • Coating covers front, back, and all edges of the shingle to seal out moisture and prevent cupping.
  • Pre-finished shingles are coated on the areas of the shingle that overlap when they are installed, providing a more complete seal against moisture.
  • Pre-finishing provides amore uniform coverage and eliminates drips, sags and lap marks.
  • Factory finishing provides a controlled environment ensuring ideal conditions for finish application and curing. Direct sun, rain, and temperature can severely degrade the quality of finishes applied on site.
  • Pre-finished Western Red Cedar shingles can be installed at any time of the year and in any weather.

Kiln Dried, Rejointed, Rebutted, and Sanded

- for superior appearance and performance

Kiln Dried

  • Prevents warping, splitting and shrinking after application
  • Finish adheres better to kiln dried wood

Rejointed

  • Side edges are re-cut to make them parallel to each other
  • Enables precise shingle spacing and alignment
  • Speeds up installation process

Rebutted

  • Bottom edge is re-cut smooth and square to the sides
  • Smooth edge accepts finish better
  • Enables precise and even alignment of shingle butts

Sanded

  • Removes any tannin stains and reveals the wood grain
  • Eliminates raised wood fibres that can cause blotchy appearance
  • Finish adheres more consistently on freshly sanded wood
