Product Overview:

Garapa is a dense fine grained hardwood that is naturally resistant to decay, rot and insect attack. It is both attractive in appearance and extremely durable and therefore ideally suited for use as exterior decking.
Our Garapa decking is air dried for optimal stability then planed to a smooth finish with eased edges. Its warm golden colour tones blend to give a beautiful natural look to both residential and commercial deck projects.

Why Use Garapa as a Decking Material?

Garapa is an extremely durable hardwood with a beautiful appearance that provides excellent value for money at just £32 per square including VAT. Up until recently Yellow Balau decking was available at this price point, however due to increases in the cost of the raw material and the US Dollar, prices have risen significantly. Garapa nicely fills the position left behind by Yellow Balau and for this reason it is increasingly being used for decking throughout Europe on both residential and commercial projects.

-Aesthetically pleasing

The colour of Garapa varies from light yellow to deep golden brown and with time will weather to a soft silver grey unless finished with a suitable exterior finish (see below for our recommendation). This warm natural looking decking with a fine interlocking grain pattern will give a high end appearance to any deck project.

-Decay Resistant

Garapa is naturally resistant to rot, decay and insect attack without the need for pressure treatment with chemical preservatives.

-Durable

Garapa's high density and hardness means that it has excellent resistance to impact and abrasion making it ideal for commercial and domestic decks with high foot traffic.

-Strong

Garapa is an exceptionally strong species therefore a 19mm thick deck board will span joists set at the standard spacing of 400mm on centre and the deck will feel solid and sturdy underfoot.

Storage and Installation Guidelines

Garapa is a durable hardwood that offers excellent performance and appearance at an economical price however it is slightly less stable than Western Red Cedar and Ipe. As with all timber Garapa will swell in wet conditions and shrink in hot dry conditions. The amount of swelling and shrinkage can vary with the density of the wood fibre which may cause slight differences in the width of the boards.

By following these basic storage and installation guidelines you will be able to maintain and optimise the stability of the timber:

1. Stack boards flat on bearers and cover with a tarpaulin or timber wrap to keep dry prior to installation.

2. Ensure there is adequate airflow beneath the deck.

3. Leave a 5mm gap between the boards for airflow, expansion and drainage.

4. Apply suitable wood finish to deck boards immediately after installation or if you prefer to take the 'belt and braces' approach finish on all 4 sides and ends prior to installation. Its also worth mentioning that if you don't 'pre-finish' you may need to wait for a window of good weather to finish the deck. (Tip: If necessary you could 'pre-finish' boards in a garage or shed and once dried they could be installed regardless of the weather).
